Many complex models attempt to deal with the deadlock problem—with backoff-and-retry protocols, for example—but they require strict discipline by programmers, and some introduce their own problems (e.g., livelock). Great programming is a discipline. But as Daylight argues in this fascinating historical account of the development of computer programming as a discipline in the 1950s and 60s, the real story is much more complicated.
